The Whakapapa area is the main base for exploring the Tongariro National Park, located in the central North Island of New Zealand. The park is famous for its stunning volcanic landscapes, including the active volcano Mount Ruapehu.

The Whakapapa ski field is open from late June to late October, with lift passes starting from $50 NZD for adults and $35 NZD for children. The ski field offers a range of skiing and snowboarding options for all levels, as well as snowshoeing and tobogganing.

During the summer months, the Whakapapa Visitor Centre is open daily from 8:30am to 5pm. Admission to the park is free, but there is a charge for parking. Guided tours are also available, with prices starting from $25 NZD for adults and $10 NZD for children.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a popular hike in the area, taking around 7-9 hours to complete. The trail is open year-round, but is subject to weather conditions and closures. The best time to hike is from late spring to early autumn (October to April).

Other nearby attractions include the Tawhai Falls, the Taranaki Falls, and the Ohakune Old Coach Road. The Tawhai Falls are accessible via a short walk from the Whakapapa Visitor Centre, while the Taranaki Falls and Ohakune Old Coach Road require a longer hike.
